ESTOC supports the opinion of many in the scientific community who believe the health risks associated with the use of Swedish snus are significantly lower than those associated with smoking tobacco products
Adult smokers changing to Swedish snus can reduce the health risks, however the best way of reducing risks is not to consume tobacco at all
ESTOC recognises there is no conclusive consensus as to what might constitute a ‘safe’ tobacco product and, therefore, no tobacco product is completely free from risk, including Swedish snus
ESTOC believes smokers should have access to smokeless tobacco products where the health risks have been shown by independent research to be much lower than those associated with smoking
ESTOC supports the rights and responsibilities of governments to regulate all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco
However, such regulation needs to be based on scientific evidence, ensuring it is both fair and proportionate
ESTOC member companies have developed their own strict standards on which such regulations could be based
