Definition and current issues

Snus is widely used in Sweden, where it has been popular for centuries. It is currently not permitted to be sold elsewhere in the European Union (EU). Despite the ban, pockets of usage of Swedish Snus can be found in Europe and elsewhere in the World.

Definition Swedish Snus

It is an oral smokeless tobacco products made of finely-ground tobacco. In addition to tobacco, water, salt, humectants and flavours are the main ingredients of snus which is partly governed by the Swedish Food Act.

There are two types of Swedish snus

Loose Snus

Loose snus can.

"Portion" Snus

Portion snus can.
In which the tobacco is packed in small tea-bag like pouches or sachets.

Swedish Snus is globally unique since it is manufactured using a heat- treatment process similar to pasteurisation. This process helps to minimise the risk of the formation of tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNA- see 4 Science and Harm Reduction) ensuring the highest possible quality and hygiene standards.
